The way it normally works is, a person wants something drawn to be tattooed on them. They leave a deposit for said drawing. They give me their number and I call them when its done, doesn’t usually take very long (about a week depending on my schedule) then they can come see it and get the tattoo, blah blah blah… And about 95% of the time it is as smooth as that.
But then there are the people who feel as though they should be up my ass the entire time i’m supposed to be drawing something for them, calling or stopping by every day, some even more than once a day, checking to see if I’m done yet. As if there was some magic that they could conjure by being annoying that will motivate me to create. If you find it let me know, cuz all this has ever done is piss me off and de-motivate me in the area of doing anything for you. I really think that there are some people in this fucked up world that don’t realize that they are quite far from being the only people on the planet, and certainly are not the only people that have asked me to draw things for them. This could obviously not be further from the truth, and regardless of who you are, what you want, or how much money you have, I do everything in the order i get it. I don’t discriminate, and i don’t play favorites. All of my clients are equally important to me, from the biggest tattoos down to the tiny little stuff. Now you know.
So think for a second, make believe you’re me. You’re sitting at your desk, pile of work next to you, every drawing with its own little important story and deadline. You take a deep breath, read the description of what that person told you yesterday and the wheels start turning, you’re getting into it and right as you feel like you know where to start you hear from behind you ” Yo Jay! How’s that thing comin’? You know what colors you’re gonna use yet? Cuz I like blue. Blues you know? You know how much we’re looking at yet? Got something for me to look at?” Yeah thats right, its the guy from the day before. This is not an uncommon scenario. You tell someone to give you about a week and they stop in bright and early the next day to check on you. Then they call. This type of progress-monitoring continues until you show these people something. Now I understand that you have this idea that you’re all amped up about, but it doesn’t just present itself out of thin air. Thats what the deposit was for, cuz somebody actually has to sit down, take time to visualize your idea (harder than it sounds) and then draw it the way you said you want it, hence the reason you came to me and didn’t just pick some bullshit out of a book or something, remember?
Thats right, new paragraph for this one. So they rush you through the whole process of drawing which metaphorically speaking, puts its foot on the throat of your creative being. But now you’re done, right? You did it. Even though it was twice as hard as it had to be because you were pestered and rushed this person is in a hurry so they’ll make the appointment for as soon as possible right? At least I didn’t get rushed for no reason right? Wrong. Because now they make the appointment for a month later, sometimes two. And the real gems of the lot of these particular types of assholes will take this opportunity to try to haggle over the price! No shit, I swear! Right? And on top of it, there are actually people that don’t see a problem with this behavior! Do you fuckin’ believe it? Cuz I still don’t, but it happens all time, thats why I’m writing this. And if you read this and feel like its about you and you’re offended…CHANGE THE WAY YOU DEAL WITH YOUR TATTOO ARTIST!!!!! Nobody wants to be constantly supervised and nobody wants to work with someone they can’t stand.
